‘Every team has the ability to beat India,’ says Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons ahead of Super Four clash

‘Every team can beat India,’ says Simmons

Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of his side’s Super Four showdown with India in the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025, insisting that the Tigers have what it takes to upset the tournament favorites.

India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, have looked dominant in the group stage, cruising into the Super Four with three straight wins. But Simmons believes that past form counts for little when the two teams walk out at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

“Every team has the ability to beat India. The game is played on the day. It’s not about what India have done before; it’s about what happens on Wednesday,” Simmons told reporters.

“It’s what happens during that three-and-a-half-hour period, and we will try to play as best we can and hope to force mistakes in India’s armory. That’s the way we win games.”

Belief the key, says Simmons

The veteran coach emphasized the importance of belief and grabbing momentum when opportunities present themselves.

“Having sat down today and discussed things, there’s a lot of belief that we have a chance. If we get a break in the game, we have to hold on to it and take the chances, and we will have an opportunity to win against India,” he added.

History against the Tigers

The challenge, however, is steep. Bangladesh have managed just one victory in 17 T20Is against India, with that lone success coming in a bilateral series. In multinational tournaments, India remain unbeaten against their Asian neighbors.

Injury concern for Litton

Adding to Bangladesh’s concerns, skipper Litton Das suffered a back strain during training at the ICC Academy Ground on Monday. The 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter felt discomfort while attempting a square cut and left practice under the supervision of physio Bayzid ul Islam.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that Litton will undergo further medical assessment before a final call is taken on his availability. His absence would be a major blow, especially given his role as both opener and captain.

High-stakes clash

With Bangladesh starting their Super Four campaign on a winning note against Sri Lanka, and India looking to extend their unbeaten run, Wednesday’s contest in Dubai promises to be a battle of belief versus dominance — with Simmons confident his side can rise to the occasion.
