Asia Cup 2025 Meeting in Dhaka

In a major breakthrough for the 2025 Asia Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly agreed to attend the upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 24, in Dhaka.

The meeting, considered pivotal for deciding the tournament’s fate, was clouded in uncertainty following India’s earlier reluctance to participate due to ongoing geopolitical tensions with Bangladesh and Pakistan. However, as per Times of India journalist Gaurav Gupta, the BCCI has confirmed its presence, with vice-president Rajeev Shukla set to represent India at the table.

Shift in Stance

India’s initial hesitation stemmed from strained diplomatic ties — including its firm opposition to any bilateral cricket with Pakistan — especially following Operation Sindoor and increased political friction earlier this year. The BCCI had also cited discomfort with Bangladesh as the host city for the meeting.

The sudden change of heart signals a possible thaw in regional cricketing diplomacy, or at the very least, a recognition of the significance of the Asia Cup 2025 — a key preparatory tournament ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026.

Pakistan Already On Ground

While India deliberated its position, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday, July 23, and was welcomed by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam. His early presence was seen as Pakistan’s intent to push forward with the tournament — possibly under a hybrid hosting model, as floated in earlier ACC discussions.

Questions Still Remain

Despite India’s attendance, Team India’s actual participation in the tournament — set to be held in the UAE — remains uncertain. Political objections and cross-border tension may still cast a shadow over the event, depending on the outcome of Thursday’s talks.

As of now, all eyes remain on Dhaka, where the ACC’s decisions could make or break the future of the 2025 Asia Cup.
