Team India’s preparations for their high-voltage Asia Cup 2025 clash against arch-rivals Pakistan hit a brief scare on Saturday after vice-captain Shubman Gill sustained a blow to his hand during a training session at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, according to Indian media reports.
Gill, who looked fluent with an unbeaten 20 in India’s opening win over the UAE earlier this week, was struck on the hand while batting in the nets. Eyewitnesses reported that the right-hander was in visible discomfort, forcing the physio to rush in. The 26-year-old walked off the field, sparking momentary concern in the Indian camp.
The scare, however, was short-lived. After receiving treatment and cooling his hand with an ice pack, Gill returned to the nets and resumed practice, though he appeared cautious in his movements.
India skipper Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir were seen in close conversation with Gill soon after the incident, while fellow opener Abhishek Sharma offered support.
Gill’s Role Crucial for India
Gill’s availability is crucial for India as they gear up for Sunday’s blockbuster against Pakistan. The opener has a solid record against the Men in Green, scoring 130 runs in four T20I outings, including a half-century. His ability to anchor the innings at the top provides stability, especially against Pakistan’s fearsome pace attack led by Shaheen Shah Afridi.
Interestingly, Gill was under the spotlight even before the tournament began, with debates over his T20I form since he had not played the format since July 2024. However, the management backed him ahead of Sanju Samson, and his calm innings against the UAE suggested a return to rhythm.
Both Teams in Strong Form
The injury concern comes at a time when both India and Pakistan enter the contest brimming with confidence. India dismantled hosts UAE by 10 wickets, chasing a modest target in just 4.3 overs, while Pakistan posted 160/7 against Oman before bundling them out for 67.
Historically, India hold a dominant record over Pakistan in T20Is, winning 10 of their 13 encounters. Their last meeting was in the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York, where Rohit Sharma’s side prevailed in a low-scoring thriller.
Focus Turns to Super Sunday
While Gill’s scare may have briefly unsettled India’s training session, reports suggest he is fit and available for selection. For India, his presence at the top of the order is not just about runs but also about setting the tone in one of cricket’s fiercest rivalries.
As the countdown to Super Sunday continues, all eyes will be on Gill’s form and how he negotiates the new ball against Pakistan’s pace battery.
