Madan Lal says India are favourites to win Asia Cup 2025

India are favourites to win Asia Cup

The build-up to the Asia Cup 2025 has already thrown up some big headlines. Former India cricketer Madan Lal has tipped India as firm favourites to lift the trophy, while at the same time, Pakistan created shockwaves by announcing a squad that does not feature two of their biggest names — Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Speaking to ANI, Madan Lal stressed that India’s balance and depth make them the team to beat, but he also highlighted Afghanistan’s rise as a serious talking point in Asian cricket.

“India is a strong favourite due to their skilled team. But in T20 cricket, you cannot ignore unpredictability. Pakistan’s form and confidence have dipped, while Afghanistan are currently playing very well. They could emerge as challengers to Pakistan’s traditional spot,” Madan Lal remarked.

He further added that Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan remain strong contenders, but India’s experience and stability give them an edge.

On the other hand, across the border, Pakistan’s squad announcement grabbed headlines for all the right and wrong reasons. Chief selector Aaqib Javed confirmed the 17-man squad with Salman Ali Agha as captain, but the exclusion of Babar Azam and Rizwan left fans and experts stunned.

Aaqib Javed, however, stood firmly by the selection.

“This team has the ability to beat India in the Asia Cup. Whether you like it or not, an India vs Pakistan game is the biggest in world cricket. Our players are ready, and we don’t want to put unnecessary pressure on them,” he said.

Meanwhile, head coach Mike Hesson offered some insight into Babar’s omission, calling on the former skipper to work on his strike rate and approach against spin.

“I think it’s harsh to judge him on just three games. Babar’s been asked to improve in some areas, especially strike rate and handling spin. He’s working hard, but for now, we’ve gone with different options,” Hesson explained.

Pakistan Squad for Asia Cup 2025:

Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris (wk), Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Waseem Jr, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Mirza, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem.

India and Pakistan are scheduled to meet on September 14 in what promises to be another high-voltage clash. With Madan Lal backing India and Pakistan making bold selection calls, the stage is already heating up before the first ball is bowled.
