Kaushal Silva Appointed Hong Kong Head Coach

In a significant move ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Kaushal Silva has officially been named the new head coach of the Hong Kong national men’s cricket team. This marks Silva’s first major international coaching assignment and signals Hong Kong’s intent to strengthen their squad before the upcoming continental championship.

A New Chapter for Hong Kong Cricket

Kaushal Silva, who represented Sri Lanka from 2011 to 2018, brings vast experience from the domestic cricket circuit where he scored 13,932 runs in 209 first-class matches, including 41 centuries. Though his international career was modest, Silva was a dominant figure in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket and has previously worked in coaching roles in Sri Lanka, England, and Australia.

The appointment was confirmed by Cricket Hong Kong, with Chairperson Burji Shroff stating:

“Kaushal’s dedication to nurturing and developing talent resonates with our vision. Under his guidance, we aim to elevate our performance and promote cricket within the community.”

Silva’s Vision for Hong Kong

Silva expressed his excitement about the opportunity and shared his focus areas:

“The aim will be to instill a strong work ethic, build a winning mentality within the senior squad, and identify young talent to build a stronger future.”

With the Asia Cup 2025 on the horizon, Silva will have limited time to prepare his side, but he is expected to start training camps immediately to get the team ready.

Asia Cup 2025: Hong Kong’s Group & Fixtures

Hong Kong has been placed in Group B alongside Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan — a challenging lineup. Their schedule is as follows:

  • Afghanistan vs Hong Kong – 9th September 2025
  • Hong Kong vs Bangladesh – 11th September 2025
  • Sri Lanka vs Hong Kong – 15th September 2025
    (Venues to be confirmed)

These matches will not only test Silva’s coaching capabilities but will also provide a platform for Hong Kong to show their growth on the continental stage.

Final Thoughts

Silva’s appointment adds excitement to the Asia Cup 2025, which has already drawn attention due to political tensions and scheduling uncertainties. For Hong Kong, this could be the beginning of a new era under an experienced cricketing mind.
