India vs Pakistan

The Asia Cup 2025 is likely to commence on September 10, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) expected to host the tournament. According to a Cricbuzz report, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is set to finalize the schedule and announce it in early July. However, uncertainty persists over India’s participation, owing to ongoing political and diplomatic tensions with Pakistan.

Final Decision Expected Soon

The tournament, which will be held in the T20 format, is being prepared as a key lead-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. As reported by Cricbuzz:

“While nothing concrete has been finalised as yet, indications are that a formal decision could be taken next week. What’s more, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is hopeful of releasing the schedule for the six-team tournament in the first week of July.”

Although India is officially listed as the host, political complications have led the ACC to explore a neutral venue. The UAE has emerged as the most probable option.

Ongoing Diplomatic Strain and Boycott Calls

The aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack in April and Operation Sindoor in May further strained Indo-Pak relations. This led to speculation about a potential boycott by India in both ACC and ICC tournaments involving Pakistan.

Adding to that, the promotional video for the Asia Cup released by Sony Sports — featuring only captains from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh — raised questions regarding Pakistan’s involvement, though officials have not provided any explanation.

Despite this, no formal withdrawal has been communicated by either BCCI or PCB.

Official Statements Remain Cautious

Responding to earlier boycott rumors, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified:

“BCCI has not even discussed or taken any such steps regarding boycotting the Asia Cup.”

Similarly, Cricbuzz quoted a source familiar with ACC developments, who stated:

“There is growing optimism that the Asia Cup will be held as planned with India and Pakistan both participating. A final decision is expected soon.”

Hybrid Model Likely Again?

If past formats are anything to go by, a hybrid hosting model could once again be employed. In 2023, India’s matches were moved to Sri Lanka, while Pakistan hosted the rest of the tournament. A similar model might be followed in 2025 if necessary, though the current preference appears to be for UAE to host all fixtures.

Commercial Stakes Remain High

The India vs Pakistan clash remains a key revenue driver in global cricket. The ACC has already signed a broadcast rights deal with Sony Sports until 2031, reportedly valued at $170 million. These high-profile fixtures consistently attract record viewership and are seen as critical for commercial success.

What Lies Ahead?

With September 10 pencilled in as the likely start date, the ACC is racing against time to finalize logistics, venues, and schedules. Confirmation from BCCI is awaited, and a final announcement is expected by early July.

Until then, cricket fans await clarity — and a possible showdown between India and Pakistan on neutral ground once again.
