Ahead of India’s Asia Cup 2025 campaign in the UAE, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has assured fans that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will have no issues handling the T20 workload.
Bumrah, who was rested for two Test matches during India’s recent England tour, has faced scrutiny over workload management. But Gavaskar, speaking to media ahead of the tournament, dismissed concerns:
“In this Asia Cup, it is just a question of bowling four overs and that too it is not four overs at a stretch…So I don’t think there will be any problem for him to play this tournament. There will be no workload problem.”
With the Asia Cup being a T20 format, Bumrah is expected to bowl only limited overs per game, allowing the team management flexibility in scheduling his appearances. The pacer also enjoyed a nearly 40-day break between the England Test series and the start of the tournament.
Bumrah’s last T20I outing was in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Bridgetown, where he returned figures of 2 for 18, helping India lift the trophy with a seven-run win.
India, led by skipper Suryakumar Yadav with Shubman Gill as deputy, will open their Asia Cup campaign against hosts UAE on September 10, followed by the high-octane clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14, and concluding the group stage with Oman on September 19.
Although India is the designated host, all matches are being played across UAE venues. Group A features India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B has Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong.
With Bumrah fit and ready, India looks well-prepared to defend its title and aim for a record-extending ninth Asia Cup triumph.
