Aakash Chopra

With the 2025 Asia Cup just over a month away, discussions around India’s squad have begun to intensify. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has sparked fresh debate by stating that Jasprit Bumrah’s availability remains doubtful, while Mohammed Shami is almost certainly out of contention.

India’s Squad Taking Shape – But Without Key Names?

The Asia Cup 2025, scheduled from September 9 to 28 in the UAE, has officially been greenlit following weeks of uncertainty. BCCI’s eventual nod to participate has ensured that arch-rivals India and Pakistan will face off on September 14, with the potential of up to three meetings should both teams progress to the final.

However, the focus now shifts to squad selection, and the availability of India’s frontline bowlers is in question. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra made it clear that Mohammed Shami is unlikely to feature, citing ongoing fitness issues and form concerns.

“I can almost guarantee that Mohammad Shami won’t be there. He was being tested only to check fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy. Now that the bus has sailed, and if he is not part of the Test setup, I don’t see him playing T20 cricket at this point,” Chopra remarked.

Bumrah Still a Question Mark

Chopra also added that Jasprit Bumrah’s participation depends on his workload management, especially with the England Test series concluding just before the Asia Cup window.

“Bumrah’s availability will again be a question. If he skips the fifth Test against England, there’s a strong chance he might play the Asia Cup. But nothing is confirmed yet,” said Chopra.

His statement suggests the Indian management is being cautious with Bumrah, who has only recently returned to full form after a long injury layoff.

Pant Not in Contention, Samson Favored

In another noteworthy prediction, Chopra believes Rishabh Pant may not make the squad, and that Sanju Samson is likely to retain his place as the first-choice wicketkeeper.

“I don’t think Pant will be picked. India will likely go with the combination they had during their last T20I series against England,” he said.

India’s Group Stage Fixtures

India is placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. Their campaign will begin on September 10 against UAE, followed by the much-anticipated clash with Pakistan on September 14, and their final group match will be against Oman on September 19.

What This Means for India

With Shami ruled out and Bumrah under watch, India’s pace attack may have a new look. Options like Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and Mukesh Kumar could come into the frame. Much also depends on how the team balances experience with youth in a tournament that could serve as a launchpad for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
