Pakistan’s Coach Hesson Warns Players: “Focus on the Job”

The stage is set for the most anticipated clash of the Asia Cup 2025, as arch-rivals India and Pakistan prepare to lock horns in Dubai on Sunday. With passions already running high, Pakistan coach Mike Hesson has called for calmness and composure from his players.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the New Zealander emphasized the importance of keeping emotions in check. “I guess, from my perspective, just like any time you enter a match, whether it be a final of a world event or whatever, it’s about keeping everybody focused on the job at hand, and that’ll be no different on the weekend,” Hesson said.

This will be the first meeting between the two nations since a deadly border conflict in May, making the contest even more emotionally charged. Yet, Hesson believes the team must channel that energy into performance.

India, the defending champions, are coming into the clash brimming with confidence. They demolished hosts UAE in their opener, skittling them for just 57 before chasing the target in a mere 4.3 overs. Under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, India have been in irresistible form—winning 18 of their last 21 T20Is since lifting the World Cup last year.

Pakistan, meanwhile, start their campaign against Oman on Friday. They arrive in Dubai on the back of a tri-series win in the UAE, also involving Afghanistan and the hosts, giving the side much-needed momentum.

“We’re very much focused on improving as a team, day by day, and not getting too far ahead of ourselves,” Hesson added. “We know India are hugely confident and rightfully so, but our job is to stick to our plans and stay composed.”

With both sides boasting world-class talent and a stadium expected to be packed to capacity, the India vs Pakistan showdown is set to captivate not just Dubai but hundreds of millions of fans around the globe.

Group A features India, Pakistan, Oman, and UAE, while Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh form Group B. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Four stage, with the final scheduled for September 28 in Dubai.

Sunday’s clash is more than just a cricket match—it’s a spectacle.
