With tensions surrounding the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 fixture between India and Pakistan, legendary Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram has broken his silence, urging fans and players to keep the focus on cricket.
Speaking on the Stick With Cricket podcast, Akram addressed the controversy sparked after the Asia Cup schedule was announced. Social media in India has seen calls to boycott the September 14 clash, following recent political tensions.
“Asia Cup schedule is out, there is backlash. But we in Pakistan are calm. We will be fine whether we play or don’t play. The game must go on,” Akram said.
The former captain emphasized that politics should not overshadow the sport.
“Politics apart, I am not a politician. They are patriotic about their country, we are patriotic about ours. Let’s not go below the belt. Talk about the triumphs of your country; the same goes for Pakistan and the same goes for India. It is easier said than done,” he added.
Akram also expressed hope for the revival of bilateral cricket between the two arch-rivals, something fans have long awaited.
“I hope to see a Test series between India and Pakistan in my lifetime,” he said, recalling that the last Test between the sides was in 2007 in Bengaluru.
The Asia Cup 2025, hosted across Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28, features eight teams split into two groups. India and Pakistan are drawn in Group A alongside UAE and Oman. Dubai will host 11 matches, while Abu Dhabi will stage eight.
India opens its campaign against UAE on September 10 in Dubai, followed by the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on September 14, before concluding the group stage with Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. The Super Four stage runs from September 20 to 26, with the final set for September 28 in Dubai.
With Wasim Akram’s calm perspective and call to keep cricket above politics, the Asia Cup showdown between India and Pakistan promises to remain the centrepiece of the tournament, drawing eyes from millions of fans around the world.
